Do yourself a favour and don’t take a chance and travel without insurance ….even for short day trips across the border or a weekend away – It’s tempting to save money but its not worth it, as anything can happen and emergency medical care costs in a foreign country can be astronomical – also the peace of mind knowing you are insured medically and otherwise, be it for luggage or sports equipment or cameras and phones etc will make you stress less about anything going wrong.

Some Credit Cards offer Automatic Travel Insurance if travel arrangements are made using their cards, but these are generic and offer basic coverage so I would still take additional Medical coverage especially. If you travel frequently you will save a lot of money by purchasing a Yearly OR Multi Trip Travel & Medical Insurance plan, available also for families.   Do your homework as Insurance companies differ and don’t all offer the same coverage, some don’t cover Extreme Sports, others don’t cover Seniors over a certain age etc etc.  Here are a few to consider.

SAFETY WING   insurance created specifically for Budget & Nomadic travellers. Fairly decent medical coverage in over 180 countries. Many other policies only offer coverage options of a year at max, SafetyWing allows you to travel for as long as you want to. Their monthly subscription model makes it quite affordable. Different price structures for different ages.

MEDJET  MedjetAssist^® is the premier air medical transport membership program for travelers living in the States, Canada or Mexico – short term or annual memberships availabl.  If you are hospitalized 150 miles or more from home, Medjet will arrange air medical transport all the way back to your hospital of choice in your home country — regardless of medical necessity. Most travel insurances and platinum card benefits programs will get you to the “nearest acceptable facility”, Medjet gets you all the way home.

WORLD NOMADS is one of the best – excellent all round coverage  esp if you like Adventure Travel, as it provides coverage for adventure sports and activities. Insurance can be purchased or renewed online or abroad. 24 hr support, interpretation services, emergency cash transfer and Travel Document replacement, Trip Cancellation etc. They also cover trips up to a year in duration.

TRAVELEX   a great option for Families & Seniors Their TRAVEL BASIC PLAN is cheaper for single travelers, but their TRAVEL SELECT PLAN offers free coverage for children under 18 if traveling with a covered adult – so huge savings if you have a few children. The BASIC PLANS medical coverage is in my opinion not high enough so I’d pay the extra for the SELECT PLAN even if traveling alone, or upgrade the Medical coverage. A big plus for Seniors is that there is no age limit. Also Cruise Insurance is Available. Additional Add ons are available for certain sports, baggage, expedited Passport, car rental, flights etc 

ALLIANZ TRAVEL INSURANCE   good ALL ROUND coverage. One of the better Travel Insurance coverage companies for Seniors because of their pre-existing medical condition coverage policy and no age limit for travelers.

INSURE MY TRIP   Very good Travel Insurance coverage companies for Seniors because of their extensiveplans incl Specialized Coverages like… Meet Your Cruise, Dental, Carrier Strikes and a variety of Medical plan options

IMG PATRIOTADVENTURE     a well established Company- stronger on Medical Insurance than other travel related matters – they have Riders for Extreme Sports

SEVEN CORNERS is one of the best for Travel Medical Insurance, as they offer  various Medical Plans that you can customize for Medical Treatment, Dental and Emergency Services and Assistance. Some Travel Insurance companies make it difficult insuring travelers after age 65 or 69 and this is where this company shines. 

INSURE MY EQUIPMENT  one of the best Travel Insurance companies for Camera Equipment, be it rented or your own, they also cover Musical Instruments. Customizable options incl World Wide Coverage, add crew members etc.

ATLAS TRAVEL INSURANCE another good one for Travel Medical Insurance with Flexible and good options for seniors as well aged 70 – 79

iTRAVELINSURED  a subsidiary of IMG. Apparently great Travel Insurance for Pre-Existing Medical Conditions but policies keep on changing but worth checking up on.
